Thai Boxing (Muay Thai) is a modern type of combat art born in Thailand. Muay Thai evolved from an ancient fighting style called Muay Boran. Unlike other traditional martial arts, Muay Thai allows fighters to use elbows and knees. The popularity of Thai Boxing is rapidly growing outside of Thailand and Asia. Many modern UFC fighters are former adepts of Muay Thai, and lots of techniques we see at MMA fights came from this deadly martial art.
Specifics
One of the distinctive specifics of Muay Thai is its loyalty to ancient traditions. Each fight begins with a chanting prayer called Wai Khru, accompanied with a Ram Muay dance of appreciation for the superiors, god and the other fighter. Respect towards the opponent is a crucial part of Muay Thai philosophy.
